The Scientific
Advisory Board have a crucial role to play in the LE:NOTRE Project.
Their role will be both to provide a means of external quality control
and act as a source of advice for the project Steering Committee.
Six eminent landscape architecture academics have agreed to make
up the Board and they will be asked to focus their advice in equal
parts on the process and the products of the project, with the mechanisms
and organisation taking the

Mr. Michael Downing, UK
Mike Downing attended the University
of Reading after training and two years experience in horticultural.
At Reading he studied Landscape Architecture for four years, while
for two of these he also served as an officer of the Students Union.
Having worked briefly for his old tutor, the consultant Frank Clark,
he joined the staff of the Essex County Council Planning Department,
moving on to the Architects Department of Basildon New Town. From
there he went to Newcastle to set up the landscape section in the
City Architect’s Department, and then in a lateral move a
few years later he joined the University Planning Department (now
Architecture Planning and Landscape). Here, involved in published
research and teaching, he completed an M.Sc. by research, unique
in the Arts Faculty! In 1977 he took over the running of the Landscape
Section, as Reader in Landscape Design, on the retirement of Brian
Hackett, retiring himself 22 years later in 1999,.Latterly he was
asked by the University to set up its’ European Office to
develop relations throughout all faculties with European Universities
and other organisations , taking the title Director of European
Programmes, on a part time basis. He has been Chairman of the U.K.
Landscape Institute’s Education Committee, Secretary of the
national Landscape Education Group, Secretary General of EFLA, and
having agreed to act as ‘postmaster’ for the launch
of ECLAS, its’ President from 1991 to 1998.

Professor Manuel Ribas, ES
Manuel Ribas i Piera (born 1925) studied
architecture (qualified 1950, ETSAB), and law, (Diplom in Law 1950,
Univ. of Barcelona). His doctorate was also in architecture (Dr,
arch,1963, ETSAB).
From 1965 until 1995 he was Professor at the Schol of Architecture
(ETSAB) in the Departament of City and Regional Planing (1965-1995).He
was the founder, in 1982, of the Masters course in Landscape Architecture
in the ETSAB, which was given approval in 1999 by the European Foundation
for Landscape Architecture.Today is a retired, but as an Emeritus
Professor he continues to practice as a freelance professional in
the fields of Landscape Architecture, Planning, and Architecture.
