Glossary of terms and concepts
LE:NOTRE Logo

One of the main barriers to communication between Europe’s landscape schools is language. As a result of imperfect understanding of one another’s languages there is a potential for confusion of ideas and terminology.
Two variations are possible: either we may inadvertently use of the same or similar words to refer to what are in fact different ideas in two or more cultural contexts; alternatively we may employ different words to refer to what are actually identical concepts.

The preparation of this glossary, which will also be web-based, will aim to eliminate such potential confusion and ensure that we are actually talking about the same thing when employing what we believe to be similar terminology. This will be achieved, not just by compiling lists of terms in the all the languages of the network, but also by the development of agreed definitions for these.

Clearly this is a very ambitious task, and although it will be important to identify the main key terms within the areas of interest of each subject area working group within the first year of the project, it is expected that the development of the glossary will continue throughout the whole period of the LE:NOTRE Project.
