    OUTPUTS 2002-2003
Survey of landscape architecture education
LE:NOTRE Logo

In the past several attempts have been made to survey landscape architecture schools, in particular by EFLA (the European Foundation for Landscape Architecture) and IFLA (the International Federation of Landscape Architects).
All of them, however, have been either narrow in their approach (e.g. they have covered only a small number of European Union member countries) of they are incomplete (in that they have included only institutions which offer full fledged degree programmes in landscape architecture and have ignored those universities in which landscape architecture teaching and research takes place within the context of other degree programmes). In either case such surveys are rapidly outdated, as changes overtake the information which is printed in the handbooks, often before they are printed and distributed.

This project will attempt to get around the above problems and overcome the shortcomings of previous surveys. Firstly, all 82 schools in the Network will be included, whether or not they offer a full landscape architecture degree programme, while other schools which had not formally joined the network in time to be included in the proposal for 2002-03 will be actively encouraged to take part. Secondly, by both collecting the raw data and outputting the results of the survey via the internet, the information presented will always be up to date, assuming that is, the schools themselves are willing to make the necessary alterations as and when they become necessary. This will be possible at any time from any computer connected to the internet.

This survey plans to answer the following questions:

  • Where do landscape schools currently exist in Europe (= higher education institutions in which landscape architecture teaching and/or research takes place)?
  • What different degree programmes in landscape architecture are being offered, and at which levels, and who is responsible for them?
  • Which subject areas and themes are dealt with by the various taught course units which go to contribute to degree programmes? This will aim to make use of the standard course descriptions which are recommended for ERASMUS ECTS Information Packs aimed providing information for incoming exchange students
  • How are courses structured and which components do they contain?
  • Who is involved in landscape architecture teaching and research in Europe and what are their main teaching responsibilities and research interests?
