André Le Nôtre

As well as being an acronym for 'Landscape Education: New Opportunities for Teaching and Research in Europe', the name of the project 'LE:NOTRE' also pays homage to André Le Nôtre (1613 – 1700), the famous French landscape architect, who created the parks and gardens of Vaux Le Vicomte and Versailles amongst many others.

During the second half of the 17th century Le Nôtre raised the field of landscape architecture to a new level of maturity and employed the latest technology and innovations. His ideas and approach to landscape architecture spread across the whole of Europe and beyond.
